July 12, 3 years A.B. (after-baby)

Dear Jo,

Today was a milestone that doesn’t have an empty blank waiting to be filled in a baby book. But you will be sure to write it in the margin somewhere because today was the first day that Lyla used sign language.

Dear Jo: The Sign Language Milestone

You had picked her up after giving her some floor time. As you sat down on the couch, Emerson snuggled in next to you and asked, “Can I hold her?”

And to think that you had been nervous about how he would respond to his little sister. You never imagined that he would want to sit and hold her so much. Of course she isn’t his favorite person when she’s drooling all over one of his train engines, but as long as she’s content and quiet, she’s his best friend. Or maybe a cute pet is a better term.

“Sure. But let me see if she’s hungry first,” you said.

Before you could even unsnap your nursing bra, you looked down at Lyla who looked back at you. She held out her little fist and began opening and closing it just like you had done before each feeding for weeks now. You nearly missed what she was doing until Emerson said, “Look! Milk!” He pointed at her fist and mimicked her.

“That’s right! She’s signing milk!”

You celebrated and signed back to her. And then you began to nurse her.

It was such a little thing— a tiny hand opening and closing into a fist. But it was so much more than that. Finally she can say something without having to cry. You’re making progress one milestone at a time.
